Paint Fence Panels
Summer is fast approaching, and those Garden Fence Panels are starting to look a little worn and past their best, but luckily fixing that is quicker and simpler than you might think.
Garden Fencing is usually something that we feel we can just forget about, simply put them in the Fencing Posts, and then leave them to the elements, but every once in a while, those Fencing Panels require a bit of TLC, the best, easiest and cheapest way to do that is to give them a new coat of paint, and this guide will show you how to do this effectively and to last.
How to apply the wood paint to your Fence Panels
Clear Fence Panels of Vegetation
Firstly, make sure your plants and vegetation are protected by covering them in plastic sheeting. If required trim back any of the foliage to give yourself space to work.
Pin Back Remaining Plants
If there are still plants covering the Fence Panels that cannot be covered by the sheeting or otherwise moved, then use plant ties or something similar to pin them out of the way just while the paint is being applied to the Fencing Panels and drying.
Preparing Your Fence Panels
Make sure all old nails or screws that are sticking out are removed from the Fence Panels, as well as any garden furniture moved from the vicinity. If there are any rough areas on your Garden Fencing that may cause splintering, you may want to sand them down, but this is not essential, but would provide a smooth finish to all of your Garden Fence Panels.
Apply Layer of Primer
You may want to apply a layer of Primer to your Fencing Panels, making sure you let them dry completely before applying any paint.
Apply the Paint to Fencing Panels
Now your Fence Panels are ready to be painted, make sure to use a suitably sized brush, using long vertical strokes for vertical grains of wood, and long horizontal strokes for horizontal grains of wood.
Make sure to add enough paint to your Garden Fencing to properly penetrate the wood, your paint would usually have a recommendation of how much paint you should use for a certain area. Start at the top of each Fence Panel and work your way down to catch any drips. Be careful to make sure that no drips fall to the lap gaps between the panels. If you don't wish to use a brush, you may want to you a specialized spray paint gun, which can spray your Garden Fencing much quicker if used effectively
Double Check your Garden Fencing Panels are Fully Covered
Once you have finished go back through and double check that you have not missed any areas, going over any missed spots with a brush.
Apply a Second Coat if Needed
Once you have applied one coat and allowed it to dry, apply another coat if you feel the Fence Panels require it.
Remove Plastic Coating and Pins from Plants
Once all of your Fencing Panels have been allowed to fully dry, remove all the plastic coating and ties holding back your plants and shrubbery, and place all of your garden furniture back to its original place
Fence Panel Painting Aftercare
Make sure to clean all brushes that have been used. Use white spirits if you are going to be using Oil-Based paints, as they are thicker than water based paint.
